Lakyrsiew Tea is a boutique, family-run tea garden located on ancestral Khasi land in Meghalaya, Northeast India, on the southern bank of Lake Umiam at 1,000–1,300 meters elevation. Founded by Nayan, Geert Linnebank, and their son Boris, the estate began planting in 2002 but draws on a tea history dating back over 170 years when the British first identified the region’s potential. Lakyrsiew is renowned for its organic cultivation, careful preservation of local jungle and wildlife, and obsessive focus on quality. The garden produces tiny quantities (about 1,800 kg in 2015) of white, green, and black teas, all hand-plucked and processed with custom-built machinery inspired by old English methods. The teas are celebrated for their purity, complexity, and unique terroir: black teas are noted for their chocolate, caramel, and toffee notes with a smooth, long finish; green teas are fruity and floral with minimal astringency; and special batches like Mazeppa (AV2 varietal) are prized for their nuanced flavors. Lakyrsiew’s teas are available in limited lots, reflecting the estate’s commitment to artisanal, sustainable, and people-centered production.
